Khalid Saidi, acting CEO of the Centre Cinématographique Marocain (CCM), has announced that in 2022 foreign filming in the country earned two billion dirhams, or around €179 million. That nearly doubles October 2022’s original forecast of just over one billion.
As a reminder, the turnover in 2019, the last year before all filming was halted, was 800 million dirhams.
This significant rise is mainly explained by the new tax measures introduced by the Moroccan government which have attracted a good number of foreign productions.
Asked about this year, Khalid Saidi said “2023 will be the year to break all records.” Indeed for the first quarter of 2023 the CCM claims to have already received 500 million dirhams. Several big budget international productions are expected later this year, in particular Ridley Scott’s sequel to Gladiator which alone should add an estimated 305 million dirhams.
