Hicham El Jebbari’s Ana Machi Ana is the first Moroccan feature to be dubbed into Egyptian Arabic and distributed in Egyptian cinemas.
Interviewed by the online magazine 360, the director said he is: “very proud of this initiative, a first for a Moroccan film. By dubbing Ana Machi Ana into Egyptian Arabic we wanted to show it to a wider audience and make it more accessible to Egyptian cinema-goers. […] I think it’s the best way to arouse the curiosity of the Egyptian public and encourage them to discover Moroccan cinema.”
For him, this first experience is intended to be “the beginning of a tradition which could open new markets for Moroccan cinema.” He added: “Our film industry cannot be limited to local audiences. We must take bold initiatives like this to develop it and attract an audience beyond our borders.”
Released in Morocco in December 2023, this romantic comedy is about a couple’s honeymoon which is ruined by the husband’s ex-wives.
