AFRICA / Look back at the 14th Luxor African Film Festival

Festival du Film Africain de Louxor

The 14th Luxor African Film Festival took place from January 9th to 14th.

This year 11 feature films were shown in competition. The jury – screenwriter Tamer Habib (Egypt), director Moussa Sène Absa (Senegal), director Ibrahim Shaddad (Sudan), director Sofia Djama (Algeria) and actress Akosua Busia (Ghana) – awarded the Special Jury Award to Abdenour Zahzah’s Fanon (Algeria).

By focussing on the time when Frantz Fanon was head of the Blida-Joinville psychiatric hospital, Zahzah’s film traces the genesis of the anti-colonial commitment expressed in Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks.

Among the 13 short films in competition, Anis Lassoued’s Loading (Tunisia) received the Jury Award and Chikha by Zahoua Raji and Ayoub Layoussifi (Morocco) won the Certificate of Appreciation.

On the sidelines a collaborative platform was set up so that film-makers, producers, festival organizers and television channels could discuss the future of film festivals in the digital age.
