The Italian government recently announced the reduction of the statutory investment obligations for video-on-demand (VoD) platforms.
By modifying the 2021 Media Law, Georgia Meloni’s government has reduced the percentage of turnover which streaming platforms have to invest in European films from 20% to 16%.
The change also increases the quota for Italian audiovisual production. Initially set at 50%, the government changed it to 70%. In other words of the 16% theoretically for European productions, 11.2% will now be allocated to purely Italian productions.
The European Producers Club, an association of 170 independent producers, asked the Italian government to maintain the investment obligation at 20% for European films. According to an article in Screen Daily, that rate is becoming the norm across the continent. Germany recently proposed 20% and France demands between 20 and 25%.
