On the night of March 15th to March 16th a fire broke out in Cairo’s historic al-Ahram studios.

Spotted after the filming of a Ramadan soap opera, the fire ravaged the entire studio and spread to neighbouring buildings and dwellings. According to Al-Ahram Hebdo, the public prosecutor’s office has appointed a group of experts to investigate the fire’s origin.

Built in 1944, Al-Ahram Studio is the oldest film studio in Egypt and the Arab world. It played a central role in the golden age of Egyptian cinema during the 1950’s when the country was the world’s third largest film producer. Built on three storeys, the studio extends over 27,000 m².
