Shortly before its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (June 28th – July 6th), the rights to Pavel G. Vesnakov’s feature film Windless were bought by French distributor Alpha Violet.
The film follows Kaloyan who, after the death of his father, returns to Bulgaria from Spain to sell the family apartment. Seemingly a straight-forward operation, it quickly becomes a journey of self-discovery as Kaloyan perceives the link between a childhood trauma, memory and the passage of time.
Interviewed by FNE, producer Veselka Kiryakova explains that “the director explores the stillness of memory and the muteness of a hidden childhood trauma in a meditation on time, memory and the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of our past.”
Produced by Red Carpet (Bulgaria) and Dispàrte (Italy), the film was made with a total budget of €571,931, receiving support from the Bulgarian National Film Centre (€224,971) and the Italian Ministry of Culture (€90,000).
