Having won Cinemed’s Ulysses Award at the end of October, Kaouther Ben Hania’s new documentary won the coveted Tanit d’Or at the 27th Carthage Film Festival (JCC) in early November.
For six years the director of Challat de Tunis and Imams vont à l’école followed a young Tunisian girl, Zaineb, whose father was killed in a car accident. Aged 9 she is about to leave Tunis and go with her family to Canada, where her mother hopes to start a new life with a new partner. Except that Zaineb is wary of this new country, and above all, does not like snow. Between 2009 and 2015, she tells everything to the director, who thus captures key moments in this introduction to life and the world of adults.
Produced by Cinetelefilms (Tunisia) and 13 Productions (France), “Zaineb n’aime pas la neige” was selected at this year’s Locarno and Namur festivals, before being named Best Documentary at Montpellier’s Cinemed, and then, on November 5th, winning the most prestigious award at Carthage.
As part of the Festival, Kaouther Ben Hania’s film was shown in Tunis and at Manouba University.
