USA / Mediterranean Films for the 2016 Oscars

Every country had until October 1st to nominate the film it wants to compete in the race for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. From the full list, five films will be selected to participate in this 88th edition of the Oscars to be held February 28th 2016. Those five will be announced January 14th 2016.

Among the Mediterranean countries, Romania has chosen Radu Jude’s “Aferim”, which won a Silver Bear for Best Director at this year’s Berlin Festival.

Croatia has chosen Dalibor Matanic’s “The High Sun”, winner of the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes last May.

Kosovo will be represented by Visar Morina’s “Babai”, winner of the Best Director Award at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, as well as taking 3 awards at Film Fest Munchen: Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best actor.

Other nominations from Mediterranean countries include “Wanted 18” by Paul Cowan and Amer Shomali (Palestine), “Our Everyday Life” by Ines Tanovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Goran Radovanovic’s “Enclave” (Serbia) and “Xenia” by Panos H. Koutras (Greece), Kaan Müjdeci’s “Sivas” (Turkey), “Aida” by Driss Mrini (Morocco), “Les Mille et Une Nuits volume 2: le désolé” by Miguel Gomes (Portugal), Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s “Mustang” (France), “Baba Joon” by Yuval Delshad (Israel), “Mahomet” by Majid Majidi (Iran) and Claudio Caligari’s “No Essere Cattivo” (Italy).
