Istanbul’s first cinema museum was inaugurated on February 26th.
The Turkish Cinema Museum has opened in the heart of the Europeanized Beyoğlu district, on Istiklal Street, much-frequented by tourists. It is housed in the same building as the Atlas Cinema, built in 1870 during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz and recently restored after two years’ work. There was an opening ceremony for both museum and cinema in Istanbul.
That ceremony follows the Minister of Culture’s recent pledges of around €220,000 financial support for domestic film projects, plus another €1.74 million for cinemas in difficulty because of the pandemic. Together, the two entities hope to become places for both education and entertainment, hosting events such as galas and film premieres as well as exhibitions about the national and international film industry. Founded in 1948, Cinema Atlas is one of the oldest operating cinemas in Istanbul. It is one of the few survivors of the Yeþilçam era – the heyday of Turkish film making. From 1950 to the mid-1970’s Turkish film production grew into a fully-fledged industry, producing hundreds of films a year.
