SPAIN / “Las niñas” wins 4 awards at the 35th Goyas ceremony

Pilar Palomero and her independent film “Las niñas” (“The girls”) took home 4 major awards at the 35th Goyas ceremony: Best Film, Best New Director, Best Original Screenplay – and Best Photography for Daniela Cajias, the first woman to receive this award.

Women triumphed at this year’s Goyas: 40% of the nominees were women, a historic figure to break the film industry’s “glass ceiling”. “Las niñas” is about Celia and her friends coming of age in Zaragoza in the 1990’s. In their girls-only religious school, Celia discovers that life is made up of many truths as well as a few lies.

In an interview with to El País Pilar Palomero gave details of her next project, “La maternal” – about motherhood and love, focussing on 12-year-old Carla, her toxic relationship with her mother, her early pregnancy and the social services.

The Goya ceremony was broadcast from Malaga, Andalusia and presented by actor Antonio Banderas and journalist María Casado. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the 166 nominees had to follow the event from their home. The Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España has awarded the Goyas every year since 1987. Equivalent to France’s César, there are 29 awards for the best films in the Spanish language for the year preceding the ceremony.
