TUNISIA / “Mé el Aïn”: Meryam Joobeur’s first feature in competition at the Berlin Film Festival

The Tunisian film Who Do I Belong To (in Arabic Mé el Aïn), Meryam Joobeur’s first fiction feature, has been selected for the official competition of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.

Written and directed by Ms. Joobeur, the film is about a mother, Aïcha, and her husband living with their three sons on a farm. Her life is turned upside down when their two eldest sons, Mehdi and Amine, decide to go to war. Many months later Mehdi returns, accompanied by a pregnant woman wearing the niqab.

Meryam Joobeur has directed three short films: Gods, Weeds and Revolutions (2012), Born in the Maelstrom (2017) and Brotherhood (2018). The latter won 75 international awards and was nominated for an Oscar in the Short Film category.

This year’s Berlinale has 20 international films competing for the Golden and Silver Bear awards.
