
At the 8th El Gouna Film Festival, Amel Guellaty’s debut feature Where the Wind Comes From won the Best Arab Fiction Film Award.
Where the Wind Comes From is about a rebellious 19-year-old, Alyssa, and her shy, introverted 23-year-old best friend, Mehdi. Together, they use their imaginations to escape their bleak reality. One day they hear about a competition in Djerba which could change their lives. They decide to go, no matter what – even though it means crossing southern Tunisia.
Amel Guellaty is a Tunisian director, screenwriter and photographer who turned to film-making after studying law at the Sorbonne. She has worked on productions such as Olivier Assayas’ Something in the Air (2012) and Raja Amari’s Foreign Body (2016). She made her directorial debut in 2017 with her short film Black Mamba, which won 20 international awards.
