Agora Djerba and the Focus Gabès Association have launched CinémaTdour, a 38-tonne truck transformed into a 100-seat cinema which for several months has been travelling through Tunisia.
The project was created because of the lack of cinemas in Tunisia, particularly in the country’s rural areas. This travelling cinema truck is a way “of reaching a large number of people in a short time, with few resources, to give them the experience of cinema”, explains Ghofrane Heraghi, the project’s director.
Since its launch the project has reached more than 15,000 spectators. To finance the project the association is developing partnerships with local companies in return for providing employees with free films. The travelling cinema has stopped at several companies during its journey. CinémaTdour also visits remote areas of the country so the rural population can discover cinema films.
During 2025 CinémaTdour will continue its journey in northwestern Tunisia. Ghofrane Heraghi hopes to find finance to “buy six or seven trucks and create a regular event ,” dreaming of criss-crossing “Algeria, Libya and even touring Africa.”
