The 23rd DocsBarcelona was held from May 19th to 31st. Because of the coronavirus crisis the event was put online – without affecting its popularity one bit: over 130,000 viewers watched it, an astonishing number, more than the attendance figures for any of the previous years’ editions.
55% of the selected documentaries were produced by women and many of them won awards. For example Valentina Pedicini won the Best Documentary Award for Faith, a film which has been described as offering “a shocking and immersive look at a sect of monks adept at martial arts.” Awards were also given to Maia Lekow for The Letter (Special Jury Mention), Mariana Viñoles with El gran viaje al país pequeño (Latitud Docs Barcelona Award), Mònica Cambra’s Mareas ocultas (DOC-U Award) and Nila Núñez for Lo que diran (Docs & Teens Award).
