SPAIN / Liliana Torres’ 3rd feature “Mamífera”

Distinto Films

Produced by Distinto Films and Edna Cinema, Mamífera is Liliana Torres’ third feature and closes her autobiographical trilogy which started with Family Tour (2013) and What Went Wrong (2021).

This film is set at a time when Spanish law required pregnant women to reflect for three days before having an abortion. Lola accidentally becomes pregnant and doesn’t want to keep the child. During the mandatory three days she will have to face up to important questions.

Unlike the two previous parts of the trilogy, Liliana Torres chose not to use non-professional actors: María Rodríguez Soto was cast as Lola and Enric Auquer as her husband.

To build her story, Torres was inspired by the many testimonies she collected from women during her research. “I want to help de-stigmatize the refusal of motherhood by explaining from the inside some of the reasons which can lead to it,” she explained. “I would also like this project to serve as a mirror for other women who have decided not to become mothers and who may feel alone and misunderstood.

Mamífera is a co-production with TV3 with the participation of RTVE and funding from the ICAA, the ICEC and the Creative Europe MEDIA programme. Filmax will distribute the film in Spain in 2024.
