After the success of two features, The Tree (2014) and History of Love (2018), Slovenian director Sonja Prosenc has started filming her new film Redemption. With an end of November deadline, it takes place in Ljubljana, on the Karst plateau and in Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.
Developed during a residency in Paris at the Pop Up Film Residency, Redemption is a dark comedy about a seemingly perfect family: Olivija, Aleksander and their daughter Agata. Then Julian arrives, turning their lives upside down, exposing the dysfunctional relationships which lurked beneath the surface. With humour, the film explores the emotional vacuity of the elite classes, but in a contemporary context.
With a budget of €1.5 million, the film is a Slovenian, Italian, Croatian, Serbian and Norwegian co-production headed by MONOO, a company created in 2012 by the film’s director and Rok Sečen. This international co-production has received support from many European institutions, including Creative Europe – MEDIA, the Slovenian and Croatian Film Centres and the Italian Ministry of Culture.
From her first film Ms. Prosenc has been acclaimed by critics and audiences for her approach to cinematic language. In particular Cineuropa named her one of the eight most promising European female directors.
