NORTH AFRICA / The ASBU’s 3rd Arab Media Congress was held in Tunis

The Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) held its 3rd Arab Media Congress in Tunis on January 17th and 18th.

Every year media experts, journalists and professionals come together to exchange ideas and debate the issues facing the Arab media. This year’s guest of honour was Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab. The theme running through the conference was “Media in the age of artificial intelligence: opportunities and challenges.”

At the heart of the discussions was the question of regulation. “Cyber crimes have taken place through image generators, with the help of artificial intelligence,” warned Hans Hoffmann, a senior figure at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). “Can we trust these technologies? Their overuse in the media can create many ethical problems.”

Beyond the question of ethics, discussions also focused on the advances which such technology could bring to the media, in particular through data analysis.
