Malta / The Malta Film Commission increases the rebate on production costs

The Government of Malta is increasing the cash back available for films shot on the island. Until December 31st 2023 international productions will be eligible for a rebate of 40%.

Malta Film Commission

Intended for television productions (series and films), feature films, documentaries, animated films and even trans-media works, this cash back offer is capped at €1 million or 30% of the total amount spent in Malta. For a film with a budget over €200,000 the minimum spent in Malta must be more than €100,000. Low-budget or “difficult” films have their own limit: if the total budget is €100,000, at least €50,000 must be spent in Malta.

Eligible foreign companies will have to commit to a company registered with the “Opportunity for All” scheme. This system, set up by the Malta Film Commission, is to guarantee work for Maltese professionals.

With this discount the Maltese Government hopes to improve its attractiveness to international audiovisual productions: “We have simply become bolder and better,” says Johann Grech, head of the Malta Film Commission. The 40% cash back incentive for audiovisual productions has taken another step forward. We are determined to create more opportunities which will open the door to more careers, in that way building a successful, sustainable film industry.”

All the conditions of eligibility are available on the Malta Film Commission’s web-page.
