International Women’s Rights Day on March 8th was the occasion for Jordan’s Royal Film Commission to open the 10th Women’s Film Week in Amman. The event is organized under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma, Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, and in partnership with UN Women. Since its creation in 2012 the Film Week has promoted the work of female and male directors showcasing the place of women in the world.
The opening of this year’s event, with its slogan “Gender equality today for a sustainable future”, gave Princess Basma the opportunity to set out the problems of gender inequality in the face of the climate crisis and to illustrate these issues through cinema.
Women’s Film Week was held from March 8th to 12th at the Rainbow Theatre in Amman. 13 international films, short and long, were screened. Artistic Director Ghada Saba offered a selection of works from Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
There was a screening of Rouge (Red Soil) a film by Franco-Algerian Farid Bentoumi, which tackles the issue of industrial pollution through the story of a nurse working in a chemical plant who, with a local journalist, uncovers a web of lies. The Egyptian short film Tuk-Tuk, directed by Mohamed Kheidr, was also screened. This film, which has won several awards at international festivals, is about a woman, Walaa, who drives an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) to earn a living.
Jordan’s Royal Film Commission regularly organizes film events, including PriMed, the Festival of the Mediterranean in Images, organized by the CMCA. Find all their news on their website.
