The festival for Middle Eastern documentaries, Middle East Now, is preparing its 15th edition which will be held in Florence from October 15th to 20th.
This year’s theme: Ecologies of Resistance. For the festival organisers this theme covers both the climate crisis and war, two tragedies they consider “deeply intertwined”. Using the earthquakes which hit Morocco and Turkey, Storm Daniel in Libya and the war in Gaza as examples, the festival wants to show the “resistance” being carried out by environmental activists and those who have lived through these traumas.
It is around this theme that several films on Palestine will be presented, with screenings of Jenin, Jenin 2024 by actor/director Mohammad Bakri, No Other Land by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szo (Best Documentary Award and Audience Award at the Berlin Film Festival) and From Ground Zero, the collaborative project led by Rashid Masharawi (see our article).
During the week over 35 documentaries will be screened, coming from Afghanistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Sudan.
