Netflix and the Italian Film Commissions (IFC) have joined forces to create a fund to support the film and television industry faced with the coronavirus lockdown. In early April, the two entities announced they had created an emergency fund for workers and crews in the Italian audiovisual industry affected by the nationwide shutdown of production.
The Italian Film Commissions
is an association of 19 Italian regional commissions which promote a unified image of their country to the audiovisual industry. It facilitates production funding, provides access to local financial resources, helps obtain filming permits and encourages investment.
The online American entertainment platform is providing the Italian Film Commissions’ teams with €1 million. IFC chair Cristina Priarone said that “at this particular point in time, which is demanding special efforts from all of us, the Italian Film Commissions, with their dynamism and widespread presence, and Netflix will direct this aid towards those professionals most affected by the shutdown of operations. Being at the service of the audiovisual industry with a company like Netflix is an important opportunity, dedicating this fund to audiovisual workers is an important action, we hope that other players in the sector decide to join us.”
For his part, Felipe Tewes, director of original European and African series at Netflix said that “workers and crews have always been vital to Netflix’s success, and now we want to do our bit and help those who most need it during these unprecedented times which we are living through.”
This partnership is part of a larger project announced in mid-March by Netflix. The streaming company has created a $100 million fund to support audiovisual workforces around the world.
