On October 29th Italian director Gianfranco Rosi, winner of the 2013 Golden Lion at Venice for “Sacro GRA”, presented the first sequences of his new documentary, “Oltre Lampedusa” (literally Beyond Lampedusa), during an evening celebrating 15 years of RAI Cinema.
Produced by RAI Cinema, Luce Cinecittà and Arte France, the film “tells the stories of Lampedusa, its people, beyond the emergency, which is present anyway, like an echo,” the film-maker explains.
For the past twenty years the island of Lampedusa, the most easterly point of Italy, sees immigrants arriving every day crossing the Mediterranean from Africa. According to the International Organisation for Migration, 22,000 people have died since the 1990’s trying to reach Europe by sea.
“Beyond Lampedusa” should be released in 2016.
