The 28th Thessaloniki International Documentary Film Festival took place from March 5th to 15th in cinemas and online.

This year a total of 252 documentaries were screened, feature-length and short, including a record 80 world premieres, 32 international premieres and 11 European premieres. Greek documentaries were also well represented with 57 across the various categories.
Among the event’s many sections, the International Competition featured 14 films vying for the Gold and Silver Alexanders. Among the winners, Birds of War by Janay Boulos and Abd Alkader Habak (United Kingdom, Lebanon, Syria) won the Silver.
Several Greek documentaries were also in the same competition, including Lucas Paleocrassas’ Bugboy, Fokion Bogris’ The Golden Grip and The Way Elsewhere by Eirini Vourloumis.
First films were showcased in the Newcomers International Competition. Of the 14 docs entered, At No Cost by Mary Bouli won the Newcomers’ Golden Alexander. Her film follows a young Athenian woman who, to support herself, decides to become an egg donor.
