The bill authorising the auction of ten-year broadcasting licenses for private radio and television stations transmitting from Greece was adopted by the Greek Parliament on the night of Saturday 24th to Sunday October 25th.
According to government spokesman Olga Gerovassili, the law will “bring order to the broadcasting landscape (…) and restore transparency in the management of frequencies, a public good”.
This is a big change for the Greek private broadcasting sector, which for the past 25 years has worked with provisional licenses.
After reopening the Greek public broadcaster ERT last June, Alexis Tsipras‘ government is trying to keep its promises, supported by the European Union and the IMF, vis-a-vis restoring transparency to the private broadcasting sector.
