50 years after his death, France’s Region Sud is paying tribute to Marcel Pagnol as part of its “One year, one author” scheme. Every year the Region will celebrate a writer who has marked the region.
The French writer, playwright, film-maker and academician will be remembered through a trilogy of celebrations organised by the Region in collaboration with the Marcel Pagnol Foundation. This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of his death, 2025 the 130th anniversary of his birth and 2026 will see the opening of the Marcel Pagnol Museum in Allauch.
For Renaud Muselier, President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region and Vice President of the Regions of France, “Honouring and celebrating the work of Marcel Pagnol is an exceptional opportunity to highlight a rich, popular and modern body of work – about family, about the dignity of peasants and pride in manual work, about respect and solidarity. It’s also about approaching ecology intelligently, a call for a return to the land and access to water. Pagnol’s work is a symbol of the Provençal soul. His books and films remind us that Provence is much more than a territory, it is a state of mind, a passion, a heritage which we must cherish, preserve and pass on.”
