CYPRUS / “Jiu Jitsu”, first international production entirely shot in Cyprus

In June Cyprus will be the location for a science-fiction martial arts film, Jiu Jitsu. Directed by Dimitri Logothetis, the film is the first American production to take advantage of the Cypriot financial incentives set up last October.

Based on a 2017 comic book of the same name by Dimitri Logothetis and Jim McGrath, the film is about jiu-jitsu fighters facing an alien invasion which occurs every 6 years and endangers the planet.

The film, produced by Martin J. Barab and Dimitri Logothetis, has a budget of $24.6 million, or €21.8 million. The filming will last two months, with locations mainly in Nicosia, and more particularly in CyprusExpo, which has become a film studio for the occasion. Jiu Jitsu is the first international film shot exclusively in Cyprus.

Invest Cyprus, an agency promoting investment on the island and in particular strengthening the national audiovisual industry, said that “this project is crucial for the growth of the Cypriot audiovisual industry, but also for the entire Cypriot economy because it’s a significant investment, offering multiple benefits and promoting our country round the world.”

The agency also announced that five other international film projects have been selected to receive financial incentives.
