MOROCCO / 2020 sees sharp drop in foreign film productions

The kingdom’s film industry saw a steep decline in the number of foreign productions in 2020. The Centre Cinématographique Marocain (CCM) annual report reveals that last year only 8 foreign feature films and 9 foreign TV series were filmed in Morocco. Compared to 2019 that represents 77.5% less income from feature film productions and 74.2% less from TV series. Only drama documentaries increased. There was also a drop in cinema admissions – from 1,883,425 in 2019 to only 497,141 in 2020. In terms of international festivals, 29 Moroccan films were shown in official competitions, 12 out-of-competition and 7 won foreign awards. However 2020 had started well, with a new family comedy, “30 millions”, breaking records on release.
