Tunisia is the guest of honour at the first Alexandria Francophone Film Festival (FAFF), organized from June 18th to 23rd. The Festival will be held in the famous “Bibliotheca Alexandrina” in partnership with the French Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the Fondation des Arts de la Culture et des médias and the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image (CNCI). The event celebrates both the 50th anniversary of La Francophonie and the Tunisian-Egyptian Year of Culture (2021-2022). This was announced by Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed during a visit to Egypt:
“The festival will encourage dialogue between the cultures and civilizations of French-speaking countries and peoples, helping resolve differences between people and promote democratic values by encouraging cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as promoting a culture of peace, cooperation, democracy and human rights.”
45 films will be shown to the public, most of them co-productions involving a total of 82 French-speaking countries. The festival also includes discussions, workshops and meetings, both cultural and scientific. This year’s festival will be chaired by Egyptian actor Samir Sabry with critic Mohamed Atef as artistic director. The organising committee is chaired by writer Mohamed Salmawy. The event coordinator is Insaf Wahiba, a Tunisian academic and specialist in film.
