ALGERIA / The Soummam cinema is waiting for an operator

After its restoration as part of the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran, the Soummam cinema is waiting for an operator to run it.

The ONCI (Office nationale de la culture et de l’information), responsible for many Algerian cinemas, has launched a call for tenders. In 2022 the Minister of Culture and the Arts, Soraya Mouloudji, delegated the management of cinemas to the ONCI so they can be run by the private sector, with the aim of “revitalizing Algerian cinema.”

This 360-seat cinema in Oran, in Aïn Témouchent, has been very successful since it reopened. Indeed in an article for El Watan, the journalist M. Kali writes that once it had opened during the Mediterranean Games “it was difficult to close it again.” He added that “every Tuesday children rush there to watch screenings on a big screen and in dolby stereo.”
