Faced with some television channels’ excessive practices, the Audiovisual Regulatory Authority (ARAV) has reiterated its rules about advertising.
The ARAV made its point in a press release that “some [national television channels] significantly exceed the time allowed for advertising. This is detrimental to the viewer’s interests.”
According to the TSA, some advertising slots are more than 45 minutes. ARAV regulations state that advertising “must not exceed six minutes per hour of air time averaged across the year” and “each advertising slot is limited to a maximum of three minutes.”
In addition to advertising, the themes and subjects of series shown during Ramadan are also controlled. The Minister of Communication, Mohamed Lagab, set up a commission to monitor these programmes. El Barani, a series broadcast on Echorouk TV, was singled out because of scenes showing drug abuse. The channel’s director received a summons from the Minister of Communication.
