ALGERIA / Arav awaits its new chairman

Arav, the Algerian broadcasting watchdog, has no chairman. The incumbent, Miloud Chorfi, has been appointed Senator and has to leave office.


Miloud Chorfi, président de l’Arav, l’Autorité de régulation de l’audiovisuel en Algérie, quitte ses fonctions.It’s the job of the country’s President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, to appoint a new leader for Arav. On February 1st Hamid Grine, the Communications Minister, said in Algiers that the name of the new chairman “would soon be known”.

Until then, the Ministry of Communications will oversee the broadcasting regulator. Hamid Grine has assured that “work will continue normally” during this transition period.

On its website Arav is described as “an independent public institution, managing its responsibilities both as guarantor and guardian of the freedom to exercise the profession, it ensures supervisory control of broadcasting in Algeria and strengthens the mission of public service.”
