Two meetings to discuss the state of Algerian cinema were held on September 21st and 22nd, both chaired by the Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda. Her aim is to develop “a strategic approach to revitalise the Algerian film industry.”
Faced with the difficulties confronting the industry, the Minister said they must “remove obstacles and support film production, while also creating more multiplex cinemas equipped with modern screening equipment.” She added that she wants “a part of these cinemas to be used by organisations, cooperatives and artists, to help revitalise cultural activity throughout the country.”
Discussions also focused on the production of a film about Emir Abdelkader, a figure considered “a major figure in recent Algerian history.” The minister asked that this project be given “every form of institutional, logistical and artistic support” and that production be fast-tracked “in order to demonstrate the Algerian spirit embodied by the emir and make this film a worthy showcase for Algerian cinema.”
