On April 25th and 26th in Istanbul Turkish public broadcaster TRT presented its new digital current affairs platform at its first Broadcasting Summit with Spanish-speaking countries.
Organized by the Turkish Broadcasting Corporation (TRT), the event was themed “Mapping broadcasting strategies for Turkey and Spanish-speaking countries in the digital era.” A large number of Latin American ambassadors attended, as well as executives and journalists from 18 Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, Ecuador and Bolivia – in addition to Latin American and Spanish students studying in Turkey.
Under the slogan “The place where people matter”, TRT Español will cover news from across the Spanish-speaking world, with compelling stories from Turkey, Latin America, Spain and elsewhere. As emphasized by TRT’s Director General Mehmet Zahid Sobacı, the platform wants to draw public attention to the political, economic, social and cultural issues in Spanish-speaking countries, through the lens of TRT’s human-centred reporting.
The summit programme included round tables on several topics, including the mutual improvement and understanding which comes through Turkish and Spanish-speaking series.
Also on April 25th there was an international journalism workshop. Participants addressed key issues such as whether there can be impartial journalism, the role of media in international relations, perceptions and stereotypes, stories which are not covered, harnessing storytelling in the digital age, and more.
