Preparations are under way for the 33rd Journées Cinématographiques de Carthage (JCC), scheduled to run from October 29th to November 5th. Now in its 56th year in the heart of Carthage (Tunisia), the event showcases films from African and Arab countries, although also from the rest of the world. Through the wide range of screenings, meetings and professional workshops, Sonia Chamkhi, the event director, hopes for “an inter-change of opinions, with the shared excitement of new ideas and off-the-wall artistic proposals.”
In this year’s programme Ms Chamkhi celebrates women directors from the North and the South, trying to “rehabilitate the pioneers and discover their heirs making films in our respective countries.” Eight directors have been invited to Carthage.
Carthage Film Days has also launched a call for films:
– Submissions for the “Official Competition” must be registered before August 15th 2022. This category is for recent films from African and Arab countries, either short or full-length, drama or documentary. A jury will award “Tanits” to the best films in each category.
– For the parallel sections registration is open until August 31st 2022. These include: Semaine de la Critique (for first or second films), Carthage Ciné-Promesse (for student films) and Cinema du Monde (for international films).
This year’s event has renewed its collaboration with the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image (CNCI) which will offer financial support for four short films. The theme is the same as last year: “A film adaptation of a short story, either current or from Tunisia’s literary heritage”. Tunisian production companies can register their projects with the CNCI until July 13th 2022.
