From September 10th to 13th a new event dedicated to the cinema of the past, “Cinéma au musée” (Cinema at the Museum), was launched at the Archaeological Museum in Sousse (Tunisia).
The project was organized by the Association Culturelle Afrique-Méditerranée and the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image. Through Tunisia’s film heritage it shows viewers the early years of cinema, “revisiting the cinematographic memory of Arab countries and African countries to the south, at the same time opening windows on a wider film heritage.”
So for four evenings a selection of documentaries, dramas, silent films and restored classics were screened in the open air accompanied by live music – a film-concert. Tributes were made to Charlie Chaplin, the Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, the French director Jacques Baratier and Tunisian film-maker Albert Samama-Chikly, a cinema pioneer in Tunisia and Africa, with the screening of eight films, including the documentary “Terre sacrée” (Sacred Earth) and dramas such as “Zohra” and “La Fille de Carthage”.
