SYRIA / Notturno and the strength of those who stay behind

War, its traumatic, devastating and silent effect is at the centre of Notturno. Gianfranco Rosi filmed in close-up life during the war in Syria. His new film took three years of reflecting and shooting, travelling into Syria, Iraq, Kurdistan and the Lebanon to document war and terrorism.

But, Gianfranco Rosi does not film the obvious violence of war, instead he captures its consequences. By following different people he gives us a mosaic of people trying to live normally despite the chaos around them. Patients in a mental hospital put on a show about political absurdity. A young couple on a rooftop share a hookah while waiting for the rain. The gunshot of a bird hunter echoes the sounds of more violent explosions.
In this context, surviving is the top priority, and so Notturno shows us the strength of those who stay behind.
