SPAIN / Mustang and Truman win at the Goya Awards

On Saturday February 6th the Goya Awards were held in Madrid, bringing together the world of cinema.

The major winner of this award was Cesc Gay’s Truman.

Truman is about two childhood friends, Julian and Tomas. After years of separation they run into each other by chance, but unfortunately the reunion is short-lived: Julian has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and is looking for someone to look after his dog, Truman. A few days together with laughter, tears and memories.

The film had six nominations, including Best Director and Best Film. It won five of them.

Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Mustang, about the role of women in Turkey today, won the Goya for Best European Film.

Early summer. In a remote Turkish village Lale and her four sisters come home from school playing with some local boys, thus setting off a scandal which brings completely unexpected consequences. The family home gradually turns into a prison, school is replaced by lessons in housekeeping and arranged marriages are in the air. Driven by the same desire for freedom, the five sisters manage to subvert and bypass the limits imposed on them.
