ROMANIA / Stere Gulea’s new film in production

Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time

Produced by Libra Film Productions, filming has begun on the third instalment of The Moromete Family.

Directed by Stere Gulea, this trilogy began in 1987 with The Moromete Family – a feature film now considered one of the best Romanian films in the history of cinema. 30 years later the second episode was released, The Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time (2018), winning 9 Gopo Awards.

Based on an adaptation of Marin Preda’s best-selling novel Moromeții, these films show the slow dissolution of Ilie Moromete’s peasant family over two decades. Having described the arrival of communism in Romania after World War II, this third episode takes place in the 1950’s: Niculae Moromete (one of the sons) has become a writer and now has to choose between being part of the communist system or risking his freedom to maintain his beliefs.

With a budget of €1.6 million the new film will be shooting until April and then resume in November. National release is planned for autumn 2024.
