The Romanian Cinematographic Centre has published a study showing that between 2015 and 2016 the audience for films produced in Romania more than doubled.
Over the past two years, the number of tickets sold for Romanian films has risen from 204,000 to 428,000. Takings total €1.45 million, an increase of 140% for 2016.
Paul Negoescu’s Two Lottery Tickets, released last year, registered the best figures: €534,000 (compared with the film’s budget of €30,000). Actorie, the film’s production company, has become one of the country’s most profitable since the over-throw of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu in 1989
Cristina Jacob’s #Selfie 69 is the second biggest earner, taking €510,000.
The income from the two films together accounts for about 70% of all Romanian films produced in 2016. The market share of Romanian films in 2016, however, remains quite low at 3.39% (up from 1.90 % in 2015)
