Portugal has signed separate agreements with Morocco and Israel to develop co-productions, improve each country’s broadcast offer and strengthen their cultural ties.
The agreement signed with Israel applies to films of all kinds and any length. Both co-producing countries have to bring a minimum of 20% of the film’s total budget. This contribution is capped at 80%.
But participation is not only financial: both co-producing countries have to provide skills as well, in other words Portuguese or Israeli directors and technicians. Films co-produced under this agreement will benefit from being called a “national film” in both countries.
The terms of the agreement between Morocco and Portugal are similar, although for the moment the agreement is only for two years and covers any kind of film or broadcast production except serials. Once a year the selected projects will be evaluated by a specially created commission of Moroccan and Portuguese professionals.
The agreement also specifies the creation of a “Moroccan Film Week” in Portugal and a “Portuguese Film Week” in Morocco,in order to bring higher visibility to the co-productions and, more generally, to the cinema of each country.
