Alana Hadid, fashion designer and sister of Bella and Gigi Hadid, has announced the launch of an independent film production and distribution company, Watermelon Pictures.
Described as a being owned by Palestinians, Watermelon will promote cultural representation, social advocacy and amplify the voices of under-represented film-makers around the world.
Why the name? The company explained in a press release that the colours of a sliced watermelon (black, green, red and white) represent Palestine. As the newspaper Libération reminds us, this symbol appeared in Palestine during Israel’s ban on waving the Palestinian flag and its colours after taking control of the West Bank in 1967.
The first film announced is Vin Arfuso’s documentary The Walled Off, focusing on the Walled Off (Waldorf) Hotel conceived by the artist Banksy opposite the separation wall and managed by Palestinians.
