MOROCCO / “La Plaie”, Seloua El Gouni’s first feature

Pink Sheep Productions

Seloua El Gouni’s film La Plaie (The Wound), which recently completed shooting in Casablanca, is now in post-production. Producer Taha Benghalem, co-founder of the production company Pink Sheep, talks about the film, which is distinguished by its “100% Moroccan” character.

With a budget of 4 million dirhams (around 370,000€), this drama explores the complex mix of cultures and identities in contemporary Morocco, mixing the local dialect Darija and English.

The film is about a young woman torn between her dreams and the expectations of her family and society. After an extramarital love affair she becomes pregnant and the revelation of this triggers a succession of tragic events. Her father forces her to have an illegal abortion, leading to her death.

The makers of La Plaie want to “spark discussion,” says producer Benghalem. “To question society’s expectations and to confront deeply rooted cultural prejudices. It’s a call to action, urging the public, especially women, to stand up for justice.”

Seloua El Gouni has been involved in numerous projects such as Men in Black International and the series The Wheel of Time. A founder of Pink Sheep Productions, she is also a production supervisor, production manager and producer for internationally recognized studios. La Plaie is her first feature.
