The Moroccan parliament has approved a package of measures to promote major film projects made in the country. The new law will come into force this year, with the aim of creating jobs in the film industry.
According to Amine Tazi, managing director of Atlas Studios and CLA Studio, the measures to help producers will include a 20% reimbursement of expenses in Morocco for a production with a budget of more than one million dollars and shooting schedule of more than 18 days.
However, it should be emphasized that foreign production companies are primarily interested in the “cheap” Moroccan labour. The most obvious example is at Ouarzazate, where inhabitants live on tourism and rely on major film productions to earn a little money, with some films needing hundreds of extras.
