MIDDLE EAST / The series during Ramadan halted

Although the month of Ramadan is usually the source of many broadcast television series, this “special” year is turning habits upside down. Producers have stopped filming because of the coronavirus epidemic. Many studios have had to close their doors, leaving new series incomplete.

In Lebanon and Kuwait all productions are suspended. In Egypt, one of the biggest producers of series, almost 80% of filming has stopped even though there’s no official ban.

In the United Arab Emirates crews can only work if they stick to strict rules. Non-essential staff are excluded from sets and studios have to be constantly cleaned.

But demand for entertainment increases during the month of fasting and there is definite tension. Egyptian actor Ali Sobhy told AFP that “TV channels and production companies are putting pressure on us to finish filming before Ramadan starts. There is a conflict between artists and investors.
