ITALY USA / HBO and Rai launch an adaptation of an Elena Ferrante novel

HBO and Rai have announced they are co-producing an eight-episode series adapted from Elena Ferrante’s four-volume “My Brilliant Friend”.

These four books, about two young women born in post-war Naples, were originally published between 2011 and 2014 and are still being translated into a dozen languages. They have already been a huge success in France, the UK and the United States, although the author’s identity remains a secret.

The series is due to begin shooting this summer in Italy and in Italian. Several Italian authors, including Elena Ferrante, will collaborate on the adaptation. Saverio Costanzo will direct all eight episodes. Two Italian production companies, Wildside and Fandango, are also involved.
