ITALY / The Italian government supports minority Italian co-productions

In 2019 the Direzione Generale Cinema e audiovisivo, part of Italy’s Ministry of Culture, created this fund.

The goal is to strengthen international collaboration by encouraging Italian film-makers to think globally – “promoting cross-border co-productions while also helping Italian and European films and audiovisual productions find distribution in Italy and abroad”.

Among the winners of the 2020 project call:

  • La Tresse”, the next film by French director Laetitia Colombani,
  • Los impactados” by Argentinian director Lucia Puenzo,
  • Baltazar” by the Polish master Jerzy Skolimowski
  • Il volo” by Italian Pietro Marcello

Their call for proposals is aimed at projects with a foreign co-producer but in which the Italian share of the budget is less than 50%. The fund’s annual budget is €5 million. Aid per project is capped at €300,000, of which 80% must be spent in Italy. Since the 2019 call for projects, grants have been awarded to 79 films co-produced with 30 countries.
