ITALY – PORTUGAL / Filming Miguel Gomes’ new feature

Uma Pedra No Sapato

Portuguese director Miguel Gomes is currently in Italy shooting his new film Grand Tour.

The story begins in 1917 in Rangoon, Burma. Edward, a British colonial administrator, runs away from his fiancée, Molly, the day she arrives for their wedding. As he travels, panic gives way to melancholy. Faced with the emptiness of his existence, Edward wonders what happened to Molly. Meanwhile, his determined fiancée is looking for him.

As Variety’s article says: “The process of creating the film began with a recce to different Asian countries. Gomes and his team filmed the recce, making an archive of images and sounds.” The film will “combine shots from this trip and scenes shot on 16mm, creating continuous cinematic time.

Grand Tour is produced by Uma Pedra No Sapato (Portugal) in co-production with Vivo Films (Italy), Shellac Sud and Cinéma Defacto (France), in association with The Match Factory (Germany), Rediance (China) and Creatps Inc (Japan), with the participation of ZDF/ARTE and RTP.

Before becoming a director Miguel Gomes was a critic. His feature films have been internationally successful: Tabu (2012), Arabian Nights (2015) and Tsugua Diaries (2021). Tabu won the FIPRESCI award and Alfred-Bauer award at the 2012 Berlinale.
