After the success of two original series, Suburra and Baby, Netflix continues to invest in the Italian market. On March 29th the American giant announced three new Italian series, including two adaptations.
Kelly Luegenbiehl, vice-president of original series for Europe and Africa, said: “These new projects are all very different and will all be shot in Italy. We are deeply committed to the Italian creative community – and to the creative vision of the people with whom we work.”
Set in a village in northern Italy, the first series, Curon, has elements of the supernatural. The main scriptwriter is Ezio Abbate, who worked on Suburra, the first Netflix series made in Italy. Produced by Indiana Productions, Curon is about a woman returning to the village where she was born with her teenage children — only to discover secrets about her past.
Another original series will be Tre metri sopra il cielo, an adaptation of Federico Moccia’s novel which has already been made into a film in Italy and a series in Spain. Netflix wants to give the story a contemporary feel, and will shoot the series on the Adriatic coast.
Finally, the US SVOD service has acquired the rights of Marco Missiroli’s novel Fedalta, a story of desire and betrayal set in Milan and Rimini.
In addition to these three originals, Netflix has three other Italian projects: Lo Spietato, a film by Renato de Maria, becomes available on the platform as from April 19th; three stand-up comedy originals with Edoardo Ferrario, Francesco De Carlo and Saverio Raimondo, and a second season of its series Baby.
Talking about this desire to develop original content on Italian soil, Kelly Luegenbiehl added: “Italy is the cradle of great storytellers and amazing talent, and our aim is to find those unique and local voices which can resonate with TV lovers everywhere.”
