The 11th Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival took place from August 23rd to 30th on the island of Kastelorizo.
By focusing on a specific theme each year, the organisers hope to foster connections between people and cultures from around the world through documentary film-making and the lens of history. This 11th edition, titled What remains once the obvious has been set aside?, focused on the things we don’t see – such as human experiences ignored by the dominant narratives.
Out of 634 submissions from 156 countries, 18 feature films were selected for the main competition, with 24 shorts being included in the Micro Competition. A non-competitive programme presented 14 documentaries.
In the main competition, David Bingong’s “Les Voyageurs” (Cameroon/Spain) won the Megisti Silver Crown. The documentary is set on the border between Morocco and Spain, as Hippolyte, Mandela, La Fleur and their friends leave Tangier and try to reach Europe via Ceuta. The film is unique in that the director was once one of them. In the same category, Jihan Kikhia’s documentary “Mon Père et Khaddafi” won the Bronze Crown.
