FRANCE / The winners of the URTI Grand Prix for Creative Documentary

The jury of the 35th International URTI Grand Prix for Creative Documentary, chaired by the Greek writer, director and producer Menelaos Karaghiolis and made up of senior people in public television (Algeria, Belgium, Cameroon, Greece, Kosovo), gave its verdict on June 16^th  during the Monte Carlo Television Festival. Ten documentaries were selected, these are the winners:

Grand Prix – Trophy Arman:
“Sonita” by Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami
Germany, Switzerland, Iran – NDR / Arte – 91 minutes

In Afghanistan, a girl who loves music and singing rap refuses to get caught up in a future drawn-up for her by others. Month by month, beneath her winning smile, Sonita constructs her plan to have the future she wants: abroad, abandoning her family’s love in return for her freedom as a woman.

Médaille d’Argent :
“Next stop: Utopia” by Apostolos Karakasis
Greece – ERT – 90 minutes
Somewhere in Greece a factory manufacturing household detergents is threatened with closure. A group of workers and employees decide to take control and revive the company.

Médaille de Bronze :
“A cruel gift” by Lim Sehyeong and Lee Hokyoung
South Korea – KBS – 55 minutes
An inexorable immersion in a tragedy every human being can discover – and an invitation to live every moment, because the disease can occur at any time, separating people who love each other. A humble, discreet look inside several Korean families, full of powerful emotion and absolute intensity.

“We’ve never been kids” by Mahmood Soliman
Egypt – January for Arts and Culture – 99 minutes
For many years the director followed a poor family in Cairo. In a social category changing rapidly, a mother and her four children struggle every day to earn their meagre livelihoods.
